Apple ended its fiscal third quarter with record June-quarter revenue, strong iPhone and Mac sales, and an inventory balance almost twice its September 2025 level. It also warned that supply constraints would increase significantly in the next quarter. Those facts are not contradictory. They describe a company with plenty of demand and more stock in aggregate, but not necessarily the right components in the right combinations.
For investors, the issue is therefore not simply how many devices Apple can build. It is which devices receive scarce memory and other inputs, at what selling price, and with what margin after a unusually helpful tariff refund disappears. The constraint moves product mix from an operational detail to a financial lever.
Scarcity can coexist with a larger inventory balance
Apple's official financial statements put inventory at $11.09 billion on June 27, up from $5.72 billion at the end of September 2025. That near doubling might appear to contradict a shortage. It does not, because the balance sheet reports a dollar total rather than a bill of materials.
A device manufacturer can hold more components and finished goods while remaining short of one critical input. Inventory can also rise because the company built buffers, bought parts at higher prices, or accumulated products and components whose mix does not match current demand. Apple does not disclose enough detail to determine which explanation dominates, so the inventory increase should not be presented as proof either of overstocking or of abundant supply.
The category data show why mix matters. June-quarter iPhone revenue was $54.25 billion, up from $44.58 billion a year earlier, while Mac revenue rose to $10.35 billion from $8.05 billion. iPad revenue fell to $6.19 billion from $6.58 billion. Management's warning covers iPhone, Mac and iPad, but a constrained component does not impose the same economic cost on every device. The lost opportunity depends on which configuration cannot ship and what contribution margin it would have earned.
The allocation decision arrives before the price decision
The discovery report said Apple expects constraints across those three product families to rise significantly on a sequential basis. It also reported September-quarter guidance for total revenue growth of 9% to 11%, with iPhone growth in the mid-teens despite supply and foreign-exchange pressure.
That combination implies management is still planning growth, not describing a collapse in demand. The first response to scarcity is likely allocation: directing available inputs to models, regions and channels where demand and economics are strongest. This is an inference, not a disclosed production plan, but it follows from the need to maximize value from a fixed component pool.
Pricing is the second lever. The Associated Press reported that Apple had raised prices on Macs and iPads in connection with the memory shortage, while iPhone prices had not yet been increased. Passing through higher input costs can protect unit economics, but it also tests elasticity. A premium brand has more room than a commodity vendor, yet every price change risks moving customers toward older models, lower storage tiers or delayed upgrades.
Allocation and price therefore interact. Favoring higher-value devices can protect revenue per constrained part; higher prices can preserve gross profit per unit. But neither creates more memory, and both can distort reported category growth. A strong iPhone result alongside weaker iPad sales could reflect demand, supply priority, price, or all three. Apple has not provided the unit and component detail needed to separate them.
A 50.1% margin contains a refund that will not repeat
Apple's earnings release reported $109.4 billion of revenue, up 16% year over year, and a 50.1% company gross margin. The same release disclosed that tariff refunds added approximately two percentage points to gross margin and $0.11 to diluted earnings per share. That makes the headline margin a poor standalone baseline for the next quarter.
Management guided to a 47%-48% gross-margin range for September and, according to the earnings-call coverage, expects foreign exchange to reduce the revenue growth comparison by roughly 2.5 percentage points. The gap between 50.1% and that range cannot be assigned entirely to component scarcity: the tariff benefit, currency, product mix and cost all move together. Still, the guidance shows that record revenue and current profitability do not make the supply issue immaterial.
The asymmetry is important. If Apple secures more supply, it can sell into stated high demand. If it cannot, price and mix may defend margin but leave units unshipped. If cost inflation outpaces those defenses, margin absorbs the difference. The June quarter demonstrated purchasing power and demand strength; it did not establish that each can fully neutralize a tightening component market.
Normalization requires the right parts, not merely more stock
The strongest counterargument is Apple's scale. Its long procurement relationships, cash resources and ability to make large commitments can improve access when suppliers ration output. Premium products also offer more margin room to absorb cost. The company may therefore navigate the shortage better than the broader consumer-electronics market, and the warning may describe a peak constraint rather than a lasting impairment.
That case needs product-level evidence. Investors should distinguish a decline in aggregate inventory from genuine bottleneck relief. More persuasive signs would include shorter lead times across constrained configurations, revenue growth that does not depend on repeated price increases, a smaller difference between demand and shipments, and gross-margin resilience after removing tariff and currency effects.
Evidence against the thesis would be a broad demand slowdown that makes supply irrelevant, or disclosures showing that inventory growth consists mainly of finished devices awaiting buyers. Evidence supporting it would be continued high demand alongside product-specific shortages and explicit supplier-capacity improvement later in the cycle. Until Apple provides that detail, the balance sheet's larger stockpile and management's shortage warning should be read together: the company has more inventory, but the scarce item is the correct mix.
